An Outstanding English Dish Hilt Rapier, Circa 1620. With tapering double edged blade of ovoidal section cut with two deep fullers and incised with, ‘IVAN MARTIN’ on one side and ‘IVAN MARIN’ on the other along with numerous other blade smiths marks, steel hilt comprising shallow circular guard guard decorated both internally and externally with matching semi-circular design and pierced with circular holes, the central boss decorated with scrolling design and punched decoration, slender quillons with beautifully chiselled spherical terminals, with knuckle guard en suite with chiselled spherical moulding, quilon block decorated en-suite, with globular chiselled pommel, original wire bound grip with two Turks-heads, a fine English rapier retaining traces of original finish. 


Notes: 

There is an example of an Ivan Martinez rapier in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle - (RCIN 62989) and mentions of his blades in:

Laking, G.F., 1904. The Armoury of Windsor Castle, London. 

There are also examples of other Rapiers made by Martinez in the V&A Museum and the Wallace Collection.
