A 22 Bore Percussion D.B. Sporting Gun by John Manton, No. 4110. Converted from flintlock with browned twist barrels, silver fore-sight and signed ‘MANTON LONDON’ on gold along the central rib, breech with single platinum line, engraved tang cut with a sighting groove, border engraved locks signed, MANTON, and decorated with game at the tails, foliate percussion hammers, half-stocked in walnut and chequered at the wrist and fore-end (rubbed) border engraved mounts comprising butt cap with game on the tail, large looping trigger guard numbered on the Spurr and decorated with a hunting dog on the bow, pineapple finial and pineapple ramrod pipe, later brass tipped ramrod probably from the time of conversion. 


John Manton

Brother of Joseph, born 1752. Apprenticed to John Dixon, gunsmith, St. Martins Leicester, 1766; to William Edson, gunsmith Grantham, Lincs., 1768. Served as foreman to J. F. Twigg. Gunsmith, 6 Dover St., Piccadilly, 178101814, workshop in yard. Then as John Manton & Son. Gunmaker to Eat India Co., 1791-1806. Appointed Gunmaker in Ordinary to George IV,  1831.
