A Pair of Small Queen Anne Pistols by Freeman of London. With two-stage cannon barrels, beautifully decorated with scrolling foliage towards the muzzles, polygonal border engraved breeches decorated with star-bursts on the panels, stepped border engraved breeches decorated with scrolling foliage, border engraved actions, signed ‘JAMES FREEMAN’ beneath the springs, fitted with safety catches behind the cocks (expertly replaced) with swelling walnut butts with raised aprons behind the tangs and tear-drops behind the actions, with silver lions-head grotesque masks and fixed trigger guards. A superb early pair of pocket pistols.

Gunmaker, ‘at the Flower near the Church in St. Martins Lane’, 1719; at St. Martins Ct., 1726; St. Martins Lane 1735. Died 1736. Maker of fine silver-mounted pistols including breech loaders.
James Son of James Paul, apprenticed to father, 1730; free of Gunmakers Co., 1738. Proof piece & mark 1744. Elected Assistant, 1749; Master 1754. Gunmaker, St. Martins Lane, 1743; Lancaster Ct., Strand, 1749. Died 1756.
