An 1822 Pattern Infantry Officers Sword by Wilkinson, No: 8440. With slightly curved single edged blade cut with a long deep fuller along the back edge, etched with scrolling foliage and crowned VR cypher, regulation brass gothic hilt with incorporating royal cypher, folding inner guard, wire bound fish skin covered grip; in associated steel scabbard with two hanging rings.

This sword belonged to Jame Richard Marett, from Jersey - a well know Jersey family, possibly still descendants living on the island. James took part in some action in India and rose to the rank of Colonel. Whilst it can't be proved, the sword would most likely be carried by his son, Philip Marett - an officer in RAMC, which adopted the gothic hilt infantry sword for officers from 1905.

Lieutenant-Colonel James Richard Marett was born in the Parish of St. Lawrence, Jersey in June 1841 and completed his education at Cheltenham College. Appointed to the 2nd Native Infantry, tthaced 18th N.I., as a Lieutenant in December 1858. He served in the Assam Expedition of 1862-63 and in Bhootan operations of 1864-66, when he was present at the assault on the Chamooche Stockades. Transferring to the Bengal Staff Corps in the late 1866. Marett went on to serve as an Assistant Commissioner and District Judge, a new career that spanned some twenty years and saw his advancement to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in February 1888. He died in February 1915.
