A Superb Pair of Brass Barrelled Flintlock Blunderbuss Pistols by Nicholson. With round swamped barrels, fitted with underslung bayonets and side-mounted ramrods with horn tips and worms, stamped at the breech with London proofs and Nicholsons own barrel smith mark, beautifully engraved box-lock actions decorated with stands of arms and foliage, signed to the left within ovals, ‘NICHOLSON’ ‘CORNHILL’ ‘LONDON’ steel cocks decorated en suite, finely chequered walnut grips with unusual pierced escutcheons, with white metal grotesque mask, steel trigger guards decorated on the bow with foliage, incorporating bayonet release triggers.

William Free of Gunmakers Co. by redemption, 1780. Took Livery, 1788. Elected Assistant, 1790; Master 1793. Gunmaker, 17 Houndsditch, 1779-86; 45 Cornhill, 1786-94. Contractor to East India Co., 1779-94. Trade label advertised new-invented HOUSE GUNS, that, when fired in the Centre of the Room, will turn to the door and or windows, and fire, if attempted to be forced open in the night or any other time by Robbers.
