With blued three-stage barrel with adjustable rear sight and marked with a crown over SG in front of the sight, with an S and double broad arrow to left of sight (indicating sale by the government) and at the breech with crown over A/2. This last mark repeated on the frame, triggerguard and patchbox. Blued action. Casehardened lock with crown and VR cipher and standard Massachusetts Arms Co. markings, the primer cover with Maynard's markings. Iron patchbox. Walnut stock stamped 1 in front of the patchbox and ‘G’ ’17’ and ‘RDMR’ with crown over A. 

Condition: Fine. Front section of barrel with smooth grey metal showing some light pitting at muzzle. Balance of barrel with 60-70% blue. Bright bore. Action with 50-60% blue. Lock and Maynard cover showing much original casehardening. Wood with scattered small marks.


FOOTNOTES

Some 2000 examples were purchased by the British government for use during the Crimean War but saw little use. Most were destroyed and stripped for parts. It is said some were purchased by the U.S. government for use during the Civil War but this appears to be unsubstantiated.
