A Fine Late 16th or Early 17th Century German Wheel Lock rifle by Hans Stockmann of Drseden. Sighted, rifled, slightly swamped barrel, incised with geometric designs at the breech and around the base of the rear and fore sight, plain lock, the mechanism housing with domed brass cover engraved with scrolling foliage, the faceted and chiselled spring secured with a brass bracket in the form a horned beast's head, the full stock profusely and well inlaid with ivory decoration, the fore end with fine linear border and inset with scrolling foliate panels with a do chasing a hare between, the side plate are with two panels, one depicting a cherub and the other a stylised breasted sphinx, the butt with large inlaid rococo panel with a stag centred, the upper side of the stock with two fighting dogs, the near side with a lidded compartment, the lid being a panel of ivory decorated with strap work, foliage and a stag.
