Henry Montague Trenchards, Wilkinson Sword No. 9685.

An 1845/54 Infantry Officers Sword – Trenchard sword, Henry Wilkinson sword number 9685, manufactured in 1859 and sold to Henry Montague Trenchard (the father of Lord Trenchard of the RAF) who was an Officer in the Kings Yorkshire Light Infantry 1859-1870 then working as a solicitor, Lord Trenchard was born in 1873 and would have known this sword all his life. The sword was in Lord Trenchard’s estate and passed down the family until sold in auction alongside his personal swords in 2020. Lord Trenchard himself was an army officer, seeing much service including in the Boer War before learning to fly and joining the RFC just before WW1.

With slightly curved single edged blade, double edged towards the point, cut with a long fuller running along the back-edge of the blade running almost the entire length, etched with scrolling foliage and Royal cypher, stamped with Wilkinson number 9685 and Wilkinsons address at the forte, regulation hilt, with wire-bound fish-skin grip, in original steel scabbard with two suspension rings.
