An Early Pair of John Manton Duelling Pistols, No. 2106.

A Superb Early Pair of John Manton Duelling Pistols, No. 2106 for 1794. With browned octagonal sighted barrels, engraved ‘MATON LONDON’ along the top flays, with rear-sight towards the breeches, single gold lines and gold touch holes, case-hardened tangs each decorated with foliage, a stand of arms and a line of ribbon work, signed bevelled locks with semi-rainproof pans with stepped tails, plain safety catches, gold lined pans, highly figured full-stocks cut with chequering at the grips, rounded butts, steel trigger guards decorated with martial trophies and foliage on the bows, with pineapple finials, set triggers, with turned steel ramrod pipes and horn-tipped ramrods.

John, brother of Joseph, born 1752. Apprenticed to John Dixon, gunsmith, St. Martins Leicester, 1766; to William Edson, gunsmith, Grantham, Lincs, 1768. Served as foreman to J. F. Twigg. Gunsmith 6 Dover St., Piccadilly, 1781-1814. Appointed to Gunmaker in Ordinary to George IV, 1831.
