An Early Pair of Flintlock Holster Pistols by John Cosens, Circa 1680. With round three-stage barrels, decorated with geometric bands at the breeches, foliate engraved tangs, border engraved ‘banana shaped’ locks signed in capitals and decorated with scrolling foliage, cocks with slender bands engraved en-suite, frizens also engraved with foliage, moulded artificially figured stock, with aprons around the barrel tangs, locks and steel mounts, with silver mounts comprising chiselled serpentine side-plates, long eared butt caps with grotesque masks on the butts, steel trigger guards decorated with foliage on the bows, scroll triggers, and iron capped ramrods.

Notes:
John Cosens (also Cosnes, Cosins, Cozens and Cussens) was free of the Gunmakers’ Company in 1662 and was Gunmaker-in-Ordinary to Charles II. In 1670 he was fined for filing barrels after proof, and was Contractor to Ordnance between 1667 and 1680.
