A Superb Pair of Early Duelling Pistols by John Manton, Circa 1785 ex. Keith Neal
With sighted twist octagonal 28-bore barrels with signatures reading towards the breeches, gold-lined ouch holes, finely engraved tangs, signed bevelled detented locks each with stepped tails, safety catch, roller bearing on a ramp, and gold-lined semi-rainproof pan, figured walnut full-stocks, flat sided chequered butts, each diamond with a dot the centre, finely engraved blued iron mounts including trigger-guards with large pineapple finial, silver escutcheons engraved with a crest, set triggers, original horn tipped ramrods, each with won, traces of original finish.

MANTON
John, brother of Joseph, born 1752. Apprenticed to John Dixon, gunsmith, St. Martins Leicester, 1766; to William Edson, gunsmith, Grantham, Lincs, 1768. Served as foreman to J. F. Twigg. Gunsmith 6 Dover St., Piccadilly, 1781-1814. Appointed to Gunmaker in Ordinary to George IV, 1831.
