A 12-Bore Flintlock Sporting Gun by Edward Newton of Grantham, Circa 1755. With two-stage octagonal to round barrel retaining much of its original browned finish, turned girdle, silver fore-sight and gold-lined touch-hole, the. Octagonal breech signed ‘E-NEWTON GRANTHAM’ and struck with Newton’s own barrel marks, foliate engraved grove tang, domed lock signed ‘E. Newton’, the pan with water drains and raised border, figured walnut full-stock, carved in relief with a shell behind the barrel tang, engraved iron mounts including pierced side-plate, butt-plate engraved with martial trophy large foliate escutcheon, three engraved ramrod pipes, with original horn-tipped ramrod with iron worm. A superb early sporting gun by one of the best makers of his time.
