A Pair of Silver Mounted Holster Pistols

A Pair of 40-Bore Flintlock Silver Mounted Holster Pistols by Stanton of London, Silver Hallmarks for 1757. With tapering three-stage sighted barrels each in the Italian fashion with polygonal mid-section between turned girdles, octagonal breech cut with pairs of lines along the upper side-flats, gold-lined touch-holes, border engraved tangs decorated with scallop shells and foliage, border engraved flat bevelled locks each signed in capitals and decorated with a martial trophy on the tail, gold-lined pans, border engraved cocks (probably replaced), moulded figured full stocks (fore-ends partly replaced) each carved in low relief with a scallop shell behind the rear ramrod-pipe and barrel tang, cast and chased mounts comprising pierced trophy-of-arms side-plates, pommels each with engraved spurs and with a flower-head within a border of strapwork centred on the retaining screw with square recess in the head, trigger-guards each with scallop shell and flower-head finial and decorated with scallop shells and flower-heads on the border engraved bow, baluster ramrod-pipes, and horn-tipped ramrods.

Notes:
Johnathan Stanton was apprenticed to his uncle William Turvey in 1739, and free of the London Gunmakers’ Company in 1747, of which he was elected Master in 1765. He died in 1766.
