A Flintlock Duelling Pistol by Wogdon. With browned sighted swamped barrel, signed ‘Wogdon LONDON’ along the top flat, decorated with a geometric band at the breech, with gold touch hole, profusely engraved barrel tang fitted with standing rear-sight, stepped bevelled lock, signed in script beneath the pan, full-stocked in walnut with flat sided butt, engraved silver side-nail escutcheons, engraved steel butt-cap and trigger guard, decorated with foliage on the bow, acorn finial, turned ramrod pipes, with horn tipped ramrod with worm.

Robert, Apprentice to Edward Newton, gunmaker, Grantham, Lincs., 1748. Gunmaker at Mr. Maw’s haberdashers, Cockspur St., Charing Cross, 1764. Haymarket, 1774-1802. With John Barton, traded Wogdon & Barton from 1795, succeeded by Barton, 1803. Died aged 79. Famous for duelling pistols. Poem, Stanzas on Duelling, by an Irish Volunteer, 1783, began, ‘Hail Wogden! Patron of that Leaden death’.
