A Flintlock Blunderbuss by Wheeler & Son

With three stage octagonal to round barrel, stamped with Birmingham proofs, ramrod fitted to the side of the barrel and underslung bayonet, foliate engraved tang, stepped, bevelled lock signed “WHEELER & SON’ fitted with a sliding safety catch and decorated with foliage, half-stocked in walnut, cut with a band of chequering at the wrist and vacant shield shaped escutcheon, beautifully engraved brass furniture comprising foliate engraved butt-plate, trigger guard decorated with a flower on the bow and pineapple finial, also fitted with bayonet release catch. A lovely gun.

Robert Gun and Pistol Warehouse, 16 Staining Lane, Cheapside, 1805-08. Probably the Birmingham gunmaker, 1799-1813, who became Robert Wheeler & Son, 1814-43 and marked guns ‘London’.
