A Fine Cased Pair of Flintlock Duelling Pistols by Joseph Manton, No. 4261 for 1807. With rebrowned twist octagonal sighted barrels, case-hardened recessed patent breeches each with rectangular platinum lined maker’s stamp, platinum lined touch-holes, border engraved case-hardened tangs each decorated with martial trophies, a rocaille and with a starburst behind the tall back sight, signed case-hardened border engraved flat detonated locks each decorated with a small trophy at the tail and with a starburst behind the rainproof pan, foliate engravers cocks, engraved safety catches, and steels each with roller bearing on a ramp on the blued steel spring, the steels each engraved ‘Joseph Manton Patent’ and numbered respectively ‘1911’ and ‘1912’, figured half-stocks (minor old bruising) with chequered rounded butts and dark horn fore-end caps, border engraved blued steel mounts comprising butt-caps each decorated with a martial trophy, trigger guards en suite and each with serial number in an oval on the bow, trigger plates each with pineapple finial, and turned rear ramrod pipes, vacant silver escutcheons and barrel-bolt escutcheons, original horn-tipped ramrods, and retaining most of their original finish: in original lined and fitted mahogany case, with accessories including brassmonuted three-way flask covered in red leather (minor scuffs) steel bullet mould and pan brush, the interior of the lid with maker’s label for circa 1805-10, the exterior with circular flush-fitting brass carrying handle centred on a circular vacant brass escutcheon.
