An Etched Cabaset, Circa 1580. Of iron made in one piece, with almond shaped skull with rudimentary flattened stalk at the top, the base of the skull encircled by domed brass-capping lining rivets on embossed brass washers (missing brass plume-holder) narrow down-turned brim with turned roped edges, etched overall in the so-called ‘Pisan’ manner with bands tapering towards the top involving mythical creatures and scrolling foliage, between which are four ornate cartouches which contain figures of soldiers in classical armour, the helmet also bears an armorial crest at the front.

Ex Wigington collection.

Notes:

The arms with two wolves are those of the Spanish Villalobos (military) family.  Possibly those of Don Diego de Villalobos, a Tercio Captain during the wars in Flanders and who later published a Commentary for the military actions of 1594 - 1598.
