Brass hilted hangers with the depressed heart-shaped guard are often mistakenly called the '1742 Pattern' because they are visible in illustrations from the Duke of Cumberlands "Representations of His Majestys Forces" of that year. Several variations are known, including this style which used to have a double brass wire ropes around the wooden grip (almost all found with wire gone).
