A Superb 50-Bore Flintlock Box-Lock Pocket Pistol by Griffin, Bond Street, London, Circa 1760. With three-stage turn-off cannon barrel numbered ‘1’ at the breech, breech numbered to correspond and engraved with foliage in front of the action on both sides, border engraved action signed on a foliage scroll on ones side and with he address on a foliate school on the other, border engraved cock with scrolling foliage to rear, border engraved steel, sliding trigger-guard safety catch engraved with a flower-head on the bow, figured flat-sided butt and in lovely condition, London proofs and Foreigners mark.
Notes:
Benjamin Griffin, father of Joseph, was apprenticed to Samuel Harrison in 1719. He was allowed to prove guns by the Gunmakers’ Company between 1724 and 1731, and despite being told to give up work by the Gunmakers’ Company he continued trading in Bond Street between 1735 and 1770, the year of his death.
