A Pair of Flintlock Duelling Pistols by Wogdon, London. With sighted swamped octagonal barrels signed, ‘Wogdon LONDON’ along the top-flats, retaining much original brown, decorated in wogdons style at the breech, profusely engraved tangs with standing rear-sights, stepped, bevelled locks, signed in script beneath the pans and fitted with sliding safety catches, full stocked in walnut with slab sided swelling butts, foliate engraved steel mounts retaining faded blue, trigger guards with acorn finials, with brass mounted loading rods with iron worms.

A nice pair suitable for casing.

WOGDON/WOGDEN
Robert Apprentice to Edward Newton, gunmaker, Grantham, Lincs, 1748. Gunmaker at Mr Maw haberdasher, Cockspur Street, Charing Cross, 1764; Haymarket, 1774-1802. With John Barton traded as Wogdon & Barton, from 1795, succeeded by Barton, 1803. Famous for duelling pistols. Poem, Stanzas on Duelling, by an Irish Volunteer, 1783, began, ‘Hail Wogden, Patron of that Leaden death’.
