A high quality English Pikemans Helemt about 1635. Made in two pieces joined by rivets at the brim and in a comb. The helmet has a large bowl bordered at the comb and brim with double incised lines. A line of brass capped rivets runs around the bases the bowl the original plume holder at the rear. The brim is broad and curves down at either side to a sunken border with another row of brass capped lining rivets. The brim is stated with a recessed SS makers mark on one side and with a crowned A mark of the London Armourers Company used from the 1620s to 1649. There is a long dent to the right hand side of the bowl which has been partially raised and is consistent with having been made by a sword blow. There is one modern repair to the underside of the front peak to the right. 

The helmet retaining its black painted finish highlighting the brass decorative rivets. The cheek pieces are absent. A fine, rare and impressive helmet in excellent condition.

Solomon Sibthorp was a London armourer apprenticed to James Giles for 8 years fromMichaelmas 1625, turned over to Samuel Ashton on 15 January 1628/9 and was made free on 01 October 1633. 


 

Accompanying the helmet is a letter from former Keeper of Armour at the Royal Armouries Thom Richards confirming details of the identification.
