A Superb 10-Bore Percussion Sporting Gun by Wilkinson & Son. With octagonal to round sighted barrel retaining much original finish, signed ‘WILKINSON & SON GUN MAKER TO HER MAJESTY PALL MALL LONDON’. Case-hardened breech block with platinum plug, profusely engraved barrel tang, profusely engraved lock and cock, signed, ‘WILKINSON & SON’ half-stocked in walnut, cut with a band of chequering at the wrist, unusual drop-stock (I have seen this style of stock on fine Continental long guns) beautifully engraved mounts comprising butt-plate, trigger guard with stylised pineapple finial, and for-end, original brass-tipped ramrod. The gun retain gin large amounts of original finish throughout. A very nice example.
Notes:
The gun was sold by James Wilkinson on 26th August 1848. The item was purchased by The Earl of Ashburnham.
