A .577 calibre Portuguese Contract Snider Cavalry Carbine. With round sighted barrel, lock plate marked BSA & Co 1875 and engraved with Portuguese Crown over GP, standard pattern furniture, walnut half-stock, retains original cleaning tools in the butt.  

In October 1874 BSA arranged a contract with the Portuguese Government for the supply of 10,000 Snider long rifles and 1200 Snider Cavalry Carbines. BSA production was completed on time and this carbine is one of the 1200 ordered.
