A Small Pair of Queen Anne Pistols by Birkell. With round three-stage turn-off cannon barrels, the breeches engraved with rococo foliage, signed beneath the chiselled steel-springs and struck with London proof marks and Birkells own barrel smith mark, engraved ‘LONDON’ along the top flats, border engraved tangs each engraved with foliage, border engraved actions, cocks and steels, both trigger guards engraved with a sun-burst on the bows, figured swelling walnut butts (one with a slither replacement, both have age cracks) carved in low relief with foliage around the tangs, with cast and chased silver mounts comprising scrolling foliate side-plates, escutcheons engraved, ‘M.B.’ and grotesque masks. Silver hallmarks are present but I can not read them. In smaller than usual size.
