A Cased Pair of Pistols by Wogdon
A Cased Pair of Flintlock Duelling Pistols by Wogdon of London. With browned, sighted, swamped octagonal barrels, engraved, ‘Wogdon LONDON’ along the top flats and decorated with a geometric band at the breech, matching geometric bands on the barrel tangs, both fitted with standing rear sights and engraved with scrolling foliage, stepped bevelled locks, signed in script below the pans, fitted with sliding safety catches at the rear, full-stocked in walnut with chequered butts, vacant oval escutcheons: in an associated lined and fitted case with some accessories including powder flask, bullet mould and turn-screw.

Robert, Apprentice to Edward Newton, gunmaker, Grantham, Lincs., 1748. Gunmaker at Mr. Maw’s haberdashers, Cockspur St., Charing Cross, 1764. Haymarket, 1774-1802. With John Barton, traded Wogdon & Barton from 1795, succeeded by Barton, 1803. Died aged 79. Famous for duelling pistols. Poem, Stanzas on Duelling, by an Irish Volunteer, 1783, began, ‘Hail Wogden! Patron of that Leaden death’.
