A Pair of Flintlock Queen Anne Pistols. With round three-stage turn-off barrels, the breeches each engraved with rococo foliage, signed beneath the chiselled steel-spring and struck with London proof marks and ‘Foreigners’ mark, border engraved tangs each decorated with foliage, border engraved actions, cocks and steels, both trigger guards engraved with a sun-burst on the bows, figured swelling rounded butts each carved in low relief with rococo foliage around the tang, with cast and chased silver mounts, comprising side-plates, vacant escutcheons and grotesque masks stamped in the mouth ‘JA’ for silversmith Jeremiah Ashley. IN good sleepy condition and working order.

Thomas Son of Thomas apprentice to father, 1746; free of Gunmakers Co., 1760. Gunmaker, ‘At the Cross Guns in Cornhill near ye Royal Exchange’ (trade card of c1760). May have worked earlier at Fenchurch Lane. Continued to use fathers mark, noted on pistol hall-marked 1777.
