An Interesting & Unusual Flintlock Blunderbuss by Waters. With three-stage octagonal to round barrel, flared at the muzzle and fitted beneath with a sprung bayonet, engraved with the owners address, ‘Wm DENTON PARK WAY. NEAR LEDBURY’ stamped with London proofs and decorated with rolling foliage at the breech, borer engraved steel tang decorated with a spray of foliage, stepped, bevelled lock, signed in scrip below the pan and decorated with foliage towards the rear, cockpit decorated en suite, full-stocked in walnut, inlaid with scrolling silver wire around the tang, with brass mounts comprising oval escutcheon, engraved ‘A.C.’ butt plate and steel trigger guard, also incorporating trigger release for bayonet, ramrod mounted to the side of the gun, with horn tip and steel worm. In lovely original condition.

John Waters was granted British Patent No. 1824 on 9 March 1781 for attaching bayonets to pistols, and is generally credited with the invention of the spring bayonet.
