A Flintlock Officers Pistol by Hewson of London. With round sighted barrel, engraved ‘Hewson London’ in script along the top-flat, profusely engraved tang incorporating back-sight, stepped bevelled lock, signed beneath the pan and fitted with sliding safety catch, full-stocked in walnut (some chips and repairs) chequered walnut grip, engraved steel mounts, comprising trigger guard decorated with a shield surrounded by foliage on the bow and pineapple finial, turned ramrod pipes with horn tipped ramrod with worm.

Hewson
Thomas Gunmaker, 133 Fetter Lane, 1805-08; 36 Picadilly, 1808-20. Perhaps the Thomas Hewson born 1773, who emigrated to South Africa, c, 1820. Gunsmith, Grahamstown from 1837. Died 1851.
